The first trailer for the Jumanji sequel, entitled Jumanji: The Next Level, has just dropped, and man-oh-man, is it good!
Like, far better than expected good! I really enjoyed the previous film – Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle – but this movie looks like a sequel that might surpass the original in terms of entertainment!
As is clear from the trailer, Jumani’s core group of video game adventurers are back, played by The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. (I think Nick Jonas is in there somewhere as well.) But the players controlling these characters have changed. Now, The Rock is inhabited by Danny DeVito, and Kevin Hart is controlled by Danny Glover. And I gotta say, this new dynamic for the film’s core group of adventurers is HILARIOUS.
It’s interesting to see how the film is mixing things up for the sequel. Here’s the official synopsis from Sony:
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.
Director Jake Kasdan (son of Laurence Kasdan and brother to Jon Kasdan, of SOLO: A Star Wars Story fame) returns to shepherd Jumanji’s sequel, and it looks like he takes things up a notch in both the humor and adventure department. It also seems as though Karen Gillan’s character is being given a more central role in the film as the group’s de-facto leader.
The real interesting thing to note here is that Jumanji: The Next Level will be released in December, going head-to-head against Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. This isn’t unusual territory for a Jumanji film as Welcome To The Jungle played opposite The Last Jedi back in December of 2017. That Jumanji film took in $404 million worldwide – a far cry from The Last Jedi’s $1.3 billion gross, but considering Jumanji only had a budget of $90 million, it was considered a huge hit for Sony.
With hype levels for The Rise Of Skywalker relatively low at the moment, the potential for Jumanji: The Next Level to steal some of its box office (and its thunder) is pretty good. Lots of former Star Wars fans may opt to spend their holiday watching the adventures of The Rock instead of Rey. I can’t help but wonder if The Rise Of Skywalker may fail to hit the billion dollar mark at the box office should Jumanji happen to capture a lot of buzz and word-of-mouth recommendations.
How do you think the Jumanji vs. Star Wars box office battle will turn out? Are you excited about the Jumanji sequel? What did you think of the new trailer? Let us know in the comments!
